General Note
A journal of four voyages kept by William and Sarah Mackie. William Mackie served as a mate aboard the bark Alto out of New Bedford in 1854. He left the ship in 1856 in Australia where he met and married an Australian woman named Sarah A. Spencer. He joined the crew of the Dolphin, a bark out of Warren, RI in 1856, whaling in the Indian Ocean. From February to December of 1858 he captained a cargo schooner, New Perseverence, and then in December of 1858 he returned to whaling on the bark Cherokee out of New Bedford. From March to November of 1859 Sarah Mackie wrote daily entries during the voyage of the Cherokee, during which time she also argued forcefully with the captain over the need to turn back for provisions for crew members afflicted by scurvy.
