"The history: On August 12, 1952, Russia's greatest Jewish poets and novelists were executed by Stalin. They vanished without a trace; nothing is known of how they behaved in prison, what they told their interrogators, how they confronted their executioners. Stalin deprived them even of their deaths. Paltiel Kossover is Elie Wiesel's most remarkable character, a poet (but not too good a poet), an innocent who sheds his innocence year by year, a charming, funny man whose seriousness deepens as he comes to understand the world he has helped create.
